Altea is beautifully located at the mouth of the Río Algar where it flows into the Mediterranean, in the eponymous bay between Cape Mascarat and Punta de la Bombarda. The majestic Sierra de Bernia forms the inland boundary of Altea, creating a striking backdrop.
The beaches of Altea are primarily pebble beaches and have been awarded the EU Blue Flag for cleanliness and excellent facilities. Notable beaches include Playa de la Olla (accessible), Playa del Cap Negret, Playa de la Roda (town beach), Playa del Cap Blanch, and Playa del Mascarat, near the Luis Campomanes Marina.
A stroll through Altea’s charming old town makes time fly by. The area is filled with numerous studios, shops, bodegas, and restaurants, enhancing the town's delightful atmosphere. Highlights include several chapels and churches known as Eremitas, as well as Villa Gadea – a historic, renovated villa by the sea that houses the mayor’s office, as well as various foundations and music associations.

The history of Altea dates back to the Iberians and Romans. After the Moorish rule, the Reconquista by James I of Aragón took place in 1244, and in 1279, the town was granted city rights. Notable sights include the church La Mare de Déu del Consol with its distinctive blue domes. Additionally, Costera dels Matxos 2 houses a permanent exhibition of the German painter and graphic artist Eberhard Schlotter.
