The name of the village Peratallada is derived from the Catalan pedra tallada ('cut stone' or 'broken rock'). Peratallada Castle, like the 13th century Romanesque church of Sant Esteve, is a dominant structure in the center of the village. The castle is documented as early as 1065 AD and was restored to a luxury hotel in the 1960s. Traces of settlement from the Bronze Age were found during the restoration. Today Peratallada is known for its old stone houses and furrowed stone alleys and passageways. Its proximity to the beaches of the Costa Brava and the numerous restaurants as well as small boutique hotels and artist galleries make Peratallada a popular travel destination.
