Peratallada: A Journey Back to the Middle Ages on Holiday at the Costa Brava

Peratallada enchants its visitors with an atmosphere that evokes times long past. The small village, with around 200 inhabitants, is picturesquely located in the province of Girona, just a few kilometers from the beaches of the Costa Brava. Its well-preserved medieval structure and narrow, cobblestone streets attract numerous visitors, especially during the summer months. Together with two neighboring villages, Peratallada forms the municipality of Forallac.

The village is surrounded on two sides by an imposing city wall, complete with a deep moat carved directly into the rock. Entering through the "Portal de la Verge" feels like stepping into another time. Within the walls, time seems to stand still: many buildings date back to the 16th century, and the deep grooves in the cobblestone streets tell stories of the heavy carts that once rolled through the narrow lanes.

The "Plaça Major," the heart of Peratallada, invites visitors to linger. Surrounded by charming restaurants and cozy cafés, it is the perfect place to soak in the medieval atmosphere. Just a short walk away, the castle of Peratallada majestically sits atop an imposing rock foundation. This impressive palace, with origins dating from the 11th to the 14th century, blends various architectural styles and offers fascinating insights into the region's history.

From here, you can also climb the "Torre de les Hores," an old watchtower that provides breathtaking views of the village and the surrounding landscapes. The winding alleys, the stone arches, and the many historical buildings all contribute to Peratallada's unique charm. A stroll through this village feels like a journey through time, where one can not only discover architectural treasures but also enjoy local craftsmanship and traditional Catalan cuisine in the small shops and restaurants.
